1. Very high altitude (15+ km)

Objects and locations: airplanes, unmanned aerial vehicles, meteo-probes, atmospheric and earth-surface monitoring equipment, aerial laboratories, etc. Constructive volumes protected from external factors, however there may be slightly protected volumes as well. Factors: vibrations, impacts with acceleration up to hundreds and thousands of G’s, sometimes short-term moisture, sand, dust, low pressure. Temperature of the converter case from -60 °С to +100…+110 °С. In some cases, from -70 °С to +120…+130 °С. At such heights natural radiation occurs, a careful selection of electronic components is necessary. Requirements for power units: protection from moisture, the design should be vibration and shock-resistant, case mounting should necessarily be multi-point via threaded holes. Very important are low-profile, small size and weight, high efficiency, often required parallel operation. Cooling method – forced air or conductive via heat sink.

2. High altitude aerial equipment (5-15 km)

Objects and locations: airplanes, unmanned aerial vehicles, hot-air balloons, atmospheric and earth-surface monitoring equipment, aerial laboratories, etc. Constructive volumes protected and slightly protected from external factors. Factors: vibrations, impacts with acceleration up to hundreds and thousands of G’s, moisture, sand, dust. Decreased pressure, low-level radiation. Temperature of the converter case from -60 °С to +80…+110 °С, with rapid temperatures changes. Requirements for power units: protection from moisture via polymeric cover, construction should be vibration and shock-resistant, case mounting – should be multi-point via threaded holes, mounting via unit outputs is not allowed. Very important are low-profile, small size and weight, high efficiency. Parallel operation may be required. Cooling method – forced air or conductive via heat sink.

3. Low altitude aerial equipment (0-5 km)

Objects and locations: airplanes, helicopters, drones, hot air balloons, aerial laboratories, etc. Constructive volumes often open, slightly protected from externals factors. Factors: vibrations, impacts with acceleration up to hundreds and thousands of G’s, moisture, sand, dust, solar radiation, lowered pressure. Temperature of the converter case from -50 °С to +80…+100 °С, with rapid temperatures changes. Requirements for power units: protection from moisture via polymeric cover, solar radiation resistant, construction should be vibration and shock-resistant, case mounting – should be multi-point via threaded holes, mounting via unit outputs is not allowed. Very important are low-profile, small size and weight, high efficiency. Cooling method – forced air, natural convection or conductive via heat sink.

4. Land transport (cars, trains, transporters)

Objects and locations: railway locomotives and wagons, cars, tracked vehicles, transporters. Constructive volumes slightly protected from external factors, sometimes open. Factors: vibrations, impacts with acceleration up to tens and hundreds of G’s, moisture, sand, dust, dirt, decreased pressure in mountains. Hydrocarbons and salt exposure possible. Temperature of the converter case from -50 °С to +110…+130 °С. Requirements for power units: protection from moisture, salt and hydrocarbons via polymeric cover, case mounting – should be multi-point via threaded holes, mounting via unit outputs is not allowed. Construction should be vibration and shock-resistant, without significant mechanical oscillations. Small dimensions are important. As a rule, required cooling method – one-sided conductive via unit’s case bottom.

5. Telecom on land

Objects and locations: ground communications centers and control points, connecting towers, roofs of tall buildings, mountain peaks and passes. Moderately protected from external factors constructive volumes, base of which are hardware cabinets, 19-inch racks, etc. Factors: low-impact shocks and vibration, condensing moisture, dust, sand, possibly solar radiation and salt fog. Decreased pressure in mountain conditions. Temperature of the converter case from -50…-10 °С to +80…+100 °С. Requirements for power units: must be protected from moisture and salt by polymeric layer or via special housing design. Mounting via unit outputs is acceptable. Important parameters are EMC, high efficiency and parallel operation. Compact dimensions and low profile are desired. As a rule, required cooling method – one-sided conductive via unit’s case bottom.

6. Mining equipment

Objects and locations: stationary placement, diverse environment – land, underground, sea surface and underwater, hot desert and ice, mines, wells. Partial breach of protective housing is probable. Factors: significant mechanical and climatic  impact, aggressive environment. Shocks and vibration, moisture, dust, sand, dirt. Temperature of the converter case from -60…-10 °С to +80…+150 °С. Requirements for power units: protection from moisture, salt and hydrocarbons by high-temperature-resistant polymeric cover, special housing design with screw mounting is required. Mounting via unit outputs is not allowed. Must be resistant to long vibration and shock, without significant mechanical oscillations. Compact dimensions are important. Favorable primary cooling method is one-sided conductive via unit’s case bottom.

 

7. Supercomputers

Supercomputers, information displays and screens are characterized by a set of communicating modules to solve the case of delivering power to a complex object. Objects and locations: stationary compounds on surface, in underground control points, in mountains, well protected from external factors. Factors: practically there are no environmental or mechanical impacts. Temperature of the converter case is dependent on liquid cooling operation: from 0 °С to +60…+90 °С. Requirements for power units: highly important are low profile, high efficiency is critical, parallel operation. Also very important is to have one-sided cooling through the case bottom to transfer more than 90-95 % of total dissipated heat.

8. Cold-resistant equipment in low-temperature regions

Objects and locations: stationary, tracked vehicles, tractors, transporters, unmanned aerial vehicles, meteo-probes, sea surface, ice. Despite equipment being protected from external factors, it’s necessary to account for temporary breach of protection. Factors: shocks and vibrations with acceleration up to tens of G’s, wind, moisture, salt fog. Temperature of the converter case from -60 °C to +80 °C. In some cases from -65 °C. Requirements for power units: the units must be protected from moisture by polymeric cover or have special housing with screw mounting. Mounting by unit outputs is not allowed. Must be resistant to long vibration and shock, without significant mechanical oscillations. Heat transfer – via convection or one-sided conductive heatsink for heat dissipation through the unit’s bottom case side.

9. Heat-resistant equipment in high-temperature regions

Objects and locations: stationary on land surface and mobile objects: cars, tracked vehicles, unmanned aerial vehicles. Constructive volumes with low level of protection from external factors might be used. Factors: beside mechanical and climatic, characteristic impact of solar radiation, also of heat and hot soil. Environment with high level of pollution, dust, sand, hydrocarbons, etc. Temperature of the converter case from -10 °С to +100…+130 °С. Requirements for power units: protection from sand and dust via polymeric cover. Must be resistant to long vibration and shock, without significant mechanical oscillations. Important are compact dimensions, desired cooling method – conductive cooling via unit case bottom.

10. Digital signage equipment

Informational displays and screens, supercomputers are characterized by a group of communicating units delivering power to complex objects. Objects and locations: everywhere where human presence is probable – streets, shops, stations for above-ground, underground and aerial transport, etc. Constructive volumes – planar, slightly protected from external factors. Factors: condensing moisture, dirt, dust, sun. Temperature of the converter case from -50 °С to +100…+120 °С. Requirements for power units: compact dimensions and weight, low profile highly important, high efficiency, parallel operation. Critically important is one-sided heat transfer via unit case of more than 90-95 % total generated heat.

11. Active Phased Array Radar (APAR)

Powering APAR is characterized by a group of communicating units delivering power to a complex object. Objects and locations: land equipment, airplane and helicopter radars, UAV and drones, meteo-probes, outer space satellites etc. Constructive volumes – usually protected from environmental factors of mentioned objects. Factors: in certain objects there is humidity, dirt, dust and solar. Temperature of the converter case from -60 °С to +100…+120 °С. Requirements for power units: small size and weight, low-profile (very important), high efficiency, parallel operation. Critically important is one-sided heat transfer via unit case of more than 90-95 % total generated heat.
